History of Mead

Wooden barrel with a corked bottle of amber liquid and two wrapped items on a wooden surface outdoors.

Mead is one of the oldest known ancient alcoholic drinks in human history. This timeless fusion of honey, water, and yeast predates both wine and beer. Traces of mead have been discovered in ancient pottery dating back over 9,000 years, ranging from China to Northern Europe. Long before vineyards and breweries, our ancestors found that when honey met rainwater, it fermented into something golden and divine, often celebrated as the Vikings drink of the gods. Today, we are witnessing a mead renaissance, as more people rediscover this historic and flavorful beverage.

Across cultures, mead, one of the revered ancient alcoholic drinks, earned a sacred reputation. The Vikings referred to it as the 'drink of the gods,' believing it bestowed wisdom, poetry, and strength. In Celtic, Greek, and African traditions alike, mead symbolized celebration and immortality, poured at feasts, weddings, and rituals. Even ancient texts like the Rigveda and Beowulf highlight mead as one of the oldest known ancient alcoholic drinks in human history. Mead is a gift from nature, binding communities together with warmth and wonder during the ongoing mead renaissance.

Though it faded in popularity with the rise of beer and wine, mead is experiencing a true mead renaissance. Modern meadmakers blend ancient craftsmanship with contemporary flavor, reawakening this ancient alcoholic drink that once united kings, poets, and wanderers, much like the Vikings' drink of the gods. At Random Access Meadery, we honor this heritage, merging history with innovation to craft mead worthy of its legendary past.
